The law we follow
The federal Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental or financing of housing, and to publish any advertisement that indicates a preference, limitation or discrimination, because of race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status or national origin.
California law protects more characteristics in housing. According to the California Civil Rights Department, they include race, color, ancestry, national origin, citizenship, immigration status, primary language, religion, disability (mental or physical), sex and gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, marital status, familial status, source of income (including housing assistance such as Section 8 vouchers), military or veteran status, and age. Local laws may add more.
How we work
- We describe the property, not the people. Our copy covers the home, its features and what is nearby. It never says or implies who should live there.
- We follow the housing ad rules. We run housing ads in Meta's housing ad category and under Google's housing ad policies, which restrict targeting by age, gender and ZIP code. We never target or exclude audiences by a protected characteristic.
- We review before we publish. Every piece is checked for words, images and targeting that could signal a preference or limitation.
- We say no. We decline any request to create or target marketing in a discriminatory way, and we explain why.
- Our clients decide their own transactions. The agents and brokers we work with are responsible for fair housing compliance in their own business. We do not represent buyers, sellers, landlords or tenants.
Equal opportunity in our own business
We work with clients, team members and contractors without regard to any protected characteristic.
